Save film project

I decided to start this project because I love film. This might sound somewhat hypocritical, since all of my commercial jobs are shot almost exclusively with digital cameras.

Every time I hear that Kodak, Fujifilm, or Ilford discontinued another film, I start panicking and stocking up on as many rolls as I can afford or find. I don’t want film to disappear. There is something magical about film; while I realize that in 10 years it will become a luxury item for art photographers, I am planning to use it for various projects for as long as I still own a working film camera.

I am hoping to have enough patience and persistance to shoot at least one frame of film a day for the next year and post my photos on this blog, on Facebook, or on Flikr.

Reasons to love film:
  1. Opening a fresh roll of film is like opening a brand-new book – it smell wonderful and feels like unwrapping a tiny present.
  2. Newer film cameras make a wonderful whirring noise when they advance or rewind film.
  3. Older film cameras feel like they’ve been built to last forever – with one of my 20-year-old Soviet-made Zenits I can take photos, drive nails, and defend myself (they make a wonderful blunt weapon).
  4. When you get your film back from minilab and see the neat little rectangles on a strip of film, you know that the only reason they exist is because of your skill as a photographer.
  5. Getting your film back from minilab always feels like Christmas morning.
